Tata and Mahindra to work on managing worldwide chip crisis next year
Indian automotive giants Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. are reportedly looking into ways to deal with the global semiconductor chip shortage in 2022 to avoid any production disruptions. The development comes as the duo managed to capitalize on their successful product launches and are now seeking to bolster as well as expand their product portfolios. Sources claimed that Mahindra intends to launch 13 new products in India by the end of 2027, including the newest version of its best-selling Scorpio. This will be a primary focus for the company in the years ahead as it reinforces its mark as a prominent SUV maker. In this context, Rajesh Jejurikar, Mahindra's Executive Director of Auto & Farm Sectors mentioned that the launch of upgraded models such as the Thar, Bolero Neo, XUV300, and even XUV700 echoes their belief that they are on the right trajectory for success, especially based on the immense responses it has received from the public. Jejurikar further added that while the global chip shortage, which has affected several industries lately, has improved by a slight margin in recent months, it remains a source of concern given the increased freight charges, commodity price inflation, and supply chain issues revolving around it. In the same context, Shailesh Chandra, President of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, stated that the organization has been monitoring the semiconductor shortage crisis and has taken proactive steps to reduce the vulnerability on supply chain activities that have transpired and are anticipated to remain in the near term. Notably, Tata Motors recently managed to set a record-high quarterly sales figure in the passenger vehicle segment this year, a first in a decade. This, along with its escalation in market share from 7.11% to 11% year-on-year, reflects the company's broad appeal across various consumer segments.
