Israel claims COVID-19 booster shots helps in reducing infection risks

By Mateen Dalal

The Health Ministry of Israel has claimed in its latest report that a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine can significantly lower infection rates among the masses. The data also revealed that the third shot of the Pfizer vaccine is quite efficient in reducing infection rates, especially in people above 60 years who are considered highly vulnerable to the virus.

The findings were presented at the meeting of the ministry panel of vaccination experts. Moreover, this data also coincides with the latest findings by Maccabi, a well-known health care provider who is administering booster shots among the masses.

According to the statistics provided by Gertner Institute and KI Institute, the protection rates against the virus provided 10 days after the third jab are four times higher as compared to just double shots.

The Health Ministry has also stated that the masses have begun losing immunity against the virus a few months after the vaccine doses were administered. The department had previously revealed that the fully vaccinated people who were severely affected by the virus were older than 60 and had co-morbidities.

Israel has been administering the third shot of the Pfizer vaccine since July 30th and recently dropped the age eligibility for the booster shot from 60 to 40. The third shot is also being provided to other risk groups including pregnant women, healthcare workers, and teachers.

Around 1.5 million out of 9.3 million of Israel’s total population have reportedly received the third jab of the vaccine.

The United States followed by nations like Germany, France and Canada have also decided to administer the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine among their citizens. The diminishing effect of the first two doses of the vaccines and inefficacy to protect against the delta variant have raised concerns in several nations.

It is also worth noting that Israel is currently seeing a surge in COVID-19 infection rates and presently has the world’s highest infection rates per capita.
