COVID-19 cases in the U.S. drop; average daily deaths still on the rise

The United States was averaging at around 540,000 new cases daily on Friday.
Some states including Washington and Montana are still reporting a surge in infection rates.

Nationwide COVID-19 cases in the United States have been declining as a majority of the states have reported a decline in infection rates. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has claimed that some states are still witnessing a high level of Omicron transmission.

It is worth noting that the United States was averaging at around 540,000 new cases daily on Friday. But this is quite a decline from the previous high of around 800,000 cases that were reported on an average per day in mid-January.

A majority of the states have been experiencing a downward trend in COVID-19 cases, including those that saw the first signs of Omicron such as Connecticut and New York.

Despite the daily infection rates being on the decline, average daily deaths were still found to be on the rise. Meanwhile, some states including Washington and Montana are still reporting a surge in infection rates.

Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to the U.S. President, expressed that the country still has a long way to go before coming to an acceptable situation with Coronavirus, which is essentially a fall in infection levels as well as hospitalization and mortality rates.

Even the CDC Director Rochelle Walensky had issued a warning last week that although Omicron appears to be less severe than the previous strain, it has been significantly impacting the healthcare settings in the country.

The CDC has also reported that the Omicron variant accounts for 99.99% of weekly COVID-19 cases in the United States. During both Delta and Omicron spike in the last few months, hospitalization and incidence rates were found to be highest among the unvaccinated and lowest among those who had been given the booster.
