BP ventures backs Calysta with $30M for food security enhancement
Calysta, a biotechnology company recently announced that venture capital firm, BP Ventures invested $30 million to support rollout of Calysta’s FeedKind® protein, which is expected to improve global food security, cite sources. For the record, Calysta’s sustainable single-cell protein is manufactured by a commercially-authenticated gas fermentation process using non-GM microbes with a rare ability to use methane as their energy source. Through extensive customer trials, FeedKind protein has been proven to be a safe, effective and nutritious food ingredient. The new funding will help Calysta expand production of its proprietary sustainable single-cell protein. Following the investment agreement, Calysta & BP will establish a strategic partnership around gas and power supply, cite sources close to the matter. Alan Shaw, Calysta President & CEO, was reported to state that partnering with BP Ventures is a step forward for FeedKind protein. The increasing scarcity of land and water is hampering food production supply chains and it becomes a key challenge to meet future demands for protein, he says, adding that Feedkind, on the other hand, produces feed for livestock, fish & pets, pets while making smarter use of our resources. Calysta is looking forward to partner with BP Ventures, as the company prepares to globally rollout this product. The venture capital firm’s operational skills & focus on safety when deploying multiple production plants, will benefit Calysta, Shaw added. As per credible sources, Calysta’s patented, advanced fermentation process does not compete with the human food chain, uses little water & no arable land, signifying more production of food with less resources. In aquaculture, FeedKind protein is speculated to be a significant enabler for growth by reducing reliance on traditional sources of proteins. In 2010, the global population was 7 billion and is expected to reach a count of 9.8 billion by 2050. Overall food demand is expected to increase by more than 50% and that for animal-based food by nearly 70%. FeedKind protein, in this scenario, can thus help achieve a sustainable food future by avoiding deforestation & allowing the restoration of unproductive land.
