Bluebird Nordic to add 25 units to its Boeing B737-800 fleet by 2024

Iceland-based cargo airline Bluebird Nordic plans to go big with the announcement of expanding its existing B737-800 aircraft fleet through the addition of 25 units by the end of 2024. The move is likely to be a game-changer for the company, setting it ahead of the curve as a leading and highly competitive cargo operator in the freight transport sector.

Siggi Agustsson, CEO and Managing Director of Bluebird Nordic, stated that one of the reasons for this exciting new step in the company's expansion plan is the increased demand for freight shipping during the ongoing pandemic.

For the record, the company currently operates with a fleet of one B737-300 and seven B737-400 cargo aircraft, and with the latest acquisition, the fleet will rise to thirty-three aircraft, tripling its capacity, which would further drastically help the airline service the clients’ demands.

It is worth noting that the B737-800 model can carry 4 tons more load than the present B737-400 model while also providing enhanced cargo room thanks to an additional pallet position on the main deck of the aircraft. Furthermore, the new aircraft's superior fuel-burn ratio and improved technical reliability will position it as a more environmentally friendly and sustainable option for the company's cargo customers.

Bluebird’s parent company Avia Solutions Group’s sister company AviaAM leasing would deliver the first B737-800, which is expected to enter the fleet in September 2021, followed by a second in the next month.

Agustsson also expressed plans of developing back-offices in Bulgaria and Lithuania following this ambitious expansion plan.

While Bluebird Nordic awaits aircraft conversion and delivery, the aircraft will be used by Avion Express, a major part of the Avia Solutions Group of companies, for passenger flights throughout the busy summer season while providing extra capacity and exceptionally competitive costs.

The airline believes that the B737-800 would become the cornerstone of its growing fleet of modern aircraft, further strengthening its position in the freight transportation industry.
